At Hearterra we are committed to providing you with simple solutions for cleaner living. Reducing your ecological footprint doesn’t have to be complicated, and we are here to answer your questions about how to use our store, and how to incorporate more clean living into your lifestyle!  Here are some frequently asked questions:

  • Why did you create a zero-waste store?
  • In our community the City of Sault Ste. Marie has recycling limitations (you can only recycle 1 & 2 bottles - you can not recycle any clam shell containers, any plastics hot food comes in, diary containers, etc.) and so much plastic is around so many products when you buy them.  Clean North has a great list of tips to help with recycling. To become a more satisfied consumer, we decided to take matters into our own hands and open a zero-waste store. We also wanted products that are environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic and compassionate (e.g., not harmful to pets).  We are all moms and want our children to learn better ways of living, and promoting a healthier lifestyle and planet. This was the best way we felt we could do it.

  • Is it more expensive to buy zero-waste?
  • You buy more, less often.  It is less expensive.  We compare our product prices to four or five retail outlets and work to set our prices on the lower end, we want this to be affordable and simple. But depending on the product it can be more expensive sometimes.

All our product prices include the jars they are provided in. This is a deposit and you can get refunded. You essentially only have to buy the product packaging once and then just get the product refilled.  But, the whole concept of zero-waste is to reduce how much you are buying.  So overall it is more economical.  People can get caught up in the fancy/novel or trendy products and that is where it could cost more money.  In the shorter-term there might be a higher upfront cost due to the containers required, but products often last longer.  In future, once the storefront is open people will be able to bring in their own containers to refill.

  • Can I shop zero-waste on a budget?
  • Yes, we try to keep things simple and only offer necessities. This helps you purchase only those items you need.  Some items you buy will not have to be purchased again for some time (like our laundry detergent). There are some fun things like make-up at our store but you don’t need to spend on those or other items unnecessarily.

  • Is there a rewards program?
  • There will be a rewards program as we grow.  The biggest reward right now is knowing that you are reducing single-use plastics in your home or business, and you are dumping products down the drain that are safe for the earth, safe for pets, and safe for your bodies.

  • Are the products you sell safe for kids and pets?
  • Extremely - we even have a lot of unscented products to help people who have allergies or sensitivities.

  • Where do I get the refillable containers?
  • We sell them and once our storefront opens, you can bring your own.

  • Can I return the containers?
  • All containers you purchase from Hearterra are refunded when you drop them off.

  • What material is acceptable for a container?
  • Currently we try to use the most environmentally friendly containers but are open to any.  Using recycled plastic containers or reusing plastic containers still helps.

  • What if I don’t like the product after I make the purchase? Is there a return policy?
  • Yes, you can return goods that you have not used. Find our return policy here.

  • Can I use my own containers?
  • Yes, when our store is open in the Fall, you can.  Then you just buy the product and save on having to repurchase the packaging.
